8-breastIf you’re booked in for breast reduction surgery, you’re probably experiencing a whirlwind of emotions; from excitement at finally getting the shape you want, to nerves about the procedure itself.

Of course, it’s entirely normal to feel apprehensive about any form of surgery. If you’re anxious about what to expect after the procedure is finished, here’s a helpful guide to help remove the ‘fear of the unknown’ and demystify the event.

Straight After Your Breast Reduction Surgery

As soon as the surgeons have stitched the wound, a dressing will be applied and you’ll be wrapped in a supportive bandage or bra to help keep your breasts in place. Some people worry that this might be uncomfortable on the incision, but don’t worry; they’ve been designed to avoid putting pressure on the site of the incision, and they’re fully adjustable.

For the first few days, you may experience a level of pain and discomfort. This is very normal. You may also experience reduced discomfort for a week to ten days after your surgery. However, you will be able to take painkillers to help manage the pain.

You won’t be able to shower for a few days after the procedure, and you’ll need to wear a surgical bra to help support your breasts while they heal for around a month after the operation.

A Few Weeks After

A fortnight or so after your breast reduction operation, you’ll probably be feeling a lot better and you may even be able to return to work, providing you don’t do anything strenuous. You may still be feeling a little achy and tender, though this is likely to pass after a month or so.

You might also be feeling more tired than usual during this time. Again, this is very normal. Your body is working hard to heal as swiftly as possible, which requires energy!

When to Call Your Surgeon

It’s highly unlikely that you’ll experience any problems, as this procedure enjoys high levels of success. However, if you do have any bleeding or severe pain, you should contact your surgeon immediately.

“I had my first surgery in 2008 with Dr. Adams amazing results! No regrets returning when I wanted to change in 2019. I also had a lower blepharoplasty last year and it was and is absolute perfection ! I healed quickly with no signs of having the procedure done shortly after everyone was amazed at the results:)”
